Did you know that of all the different kinds of elephants it is only the pink one that skates? Or wait a minute, maybe they were blue?

The Russian adventures continues, now with Russian Illustrator MinaMilk

 photo minamilk1copyasawikman-4.jpg

I exhibited in Moscow and I did so with two great Russian illustrators and this little blog post will focus on one of them, MinaMilk. Mina and I studied illustration together at Camberwell College of Arts here in London and became very good friends and has worked on various projects together and I can still remember the first time that MinaMilk showed her drawings in a class, even the teachers were speechless, she grabs a pen, sips on some coffee and it looks like she is doodling but she is drawing up little pieces of art in a few seconds, let me show you some of her work which often is quite sexual, hand drawn and coloured in with everything from water-colours to tea bags;

MinaMilk's dream project is to walk into the wilderness and work with wild animals and make a book/performance/exhibition afterwards and her big passion is cats and she knows more about various species then I think all of us together and is dreaming about discovering new ones in the wild and recently went on a trip to Sri Lanka where she saw leopards in the wild.

I asked MinaMilk about the difference between living and working as a Illustrator in London compared to Russia and for a long time she has complained that it is very hard to get good art material as sketchbooks and good paper in Russia, I thought that she was exaggerating as I know how picky she is with her paper but after visiting Russia and some art shops I know that she unfortunately is right so we are trying to figure out a way for me to send her sketch books - which sounds easy but as most packages to Russia "get's lost", its actually not that easy at all… MinaMilk herself explains it like this;
"Of-course there is! In London it's less common that you have to explain that illustration actually is a profession and yes, that you want to get paid for it. In Russia there is more money but less chance to find it."

MinaMilk works with editorial illustration as well as fashion illustration, shop window displays, cards and stationary, products and installations. To see more of MinaMilk's work click here

Monday. Nuff Said.

Mondays. Illustration by Åsa Wikman

I liked my pms unicorn sketch so much that I have decided to turn it into a print and maybe a postcard, what do you think?

I thought that it might need a pun and have a really stupid one as my sense of humour is a bit strange, but now looking at it I think it might just be nice the way it it.

Either way, it truly reflects my mood today on this stormy, grey, rainy Monday.

Words of wisdom

Words of wisdom on a late Monday night…

Photobucket

I planned the final illustration to look like the one above but I actually prefer the sketch, with messy text all over the place so here's the Animal Kingdom Vulture.

Gorilla!

I love silly, ugly drawings that make me laugh and today I needed a good laugh so I thought that it was about time that the Animal Kingdom bear got a friend, a gorilla;

Here's some crazy stories about human beings and their relationships with animals, the crocodile Pocho in Costa Rica, Mark Duma and the polar bear Agee  and the famous Lion man Kevin Richardsson and Anita and the wolves at the Polar Zoo.

Now I will eat nutella and stalk Art Directors.

PS. Thanks for all the comments, it's nice to know that someone reads the blog, thanks for the feedback!

Birthday Hamster by Åsa Wikman
Soften up a bit

I don't show sketchbooks or sketches very often, mostly because I am a mess and don't use sketchbooks, I sketch all over the place on tissues and random pieces of paper and I if I have a sketchbook and make a drawing I like, I rip it out. But, here's a sketch, a birthday hamster.

Now I am going to make a nice big cup of coffee and prepare a upcoming exhibition with Moonko at Urban Outfitters on Kensington High Street in London :)

Have a nice weekend everyone!

Doodlers Anonymous Colouring Book 2

Best friends doodle by asa wikman
I love doodling so when Doodlers Anonymous had an open submission for their next doodle colouring book I got well excited and quickly submitted some doodles and here is one, my Kitty character out walking with her best friend, her plastic duck Henry. I don't think that my submissions made it into their colouring book, they have the cream of the cream of doodlers submitting some pretty amazing work, have a look here. But one thing is for sure, I really want the next version of their colouring book, it will definitely be amazing!

I think that most of you recognise these patterns, I have shown some of them before, here on the blog, on my website and on my Twitter account, I call them my Evolution pattern collection; Budgie Love, Swedish Winter and Evolution. The last, the Evolution pattern is much, much larger in reality, I just wanted to show how the repeat works so I scaled it down, here it is in its real scale;

I am not sure if my obsession with hand drawn animals and patterns has ceased so there might be more soon.

Have a nice weekend!
